Teaching Digital Literacy in University Chemistry Courses

Digital literacy is becoming a key topic in university chemistry teaching – two authors of us have published an article on this subject in “Nachrichten aus der Chemie” (News from Chemistry): “Teaching digital literacy in university chemistry courses” (german only).

These skills are no longer an additional qualification, but rather must be an integral part of modern scientific work. Using practical examples from Aachen, Ulm and Kaiserslautern-Landau, the article illustrates concrete ways to embed digital tools such as Chemotion or eLabFTW in practical training and teaching without having to immediately restructure entire degree programmes. It highlights both infrastructural requirements and didactic approaches – from ELN-based laboratory protocols to playful tasks such as the digital documentation of “pasta cooking”.
