New CHMO Release Featuring IUPAC Gold Book Integration!

We are thrilled to announce the latest release of the Chemical Methods Ontology (CHMO), which marks a major milestone in vocabulary standardization. Following the publication of our collaborative white paper and its subsequent discussion at our Ontologies4Chem Workshop in November 2025, we sat down with IUPAC to align our efforts. We have now officially implemented these guidelines, integrating the IUPAC Gold Book as a canonical source for textual definitions within CHMO. You can find more details on the enhancements in this GitHub issue.

While not all CHMO terms could be linked or referenced to the Gold Book in this iteration, we look forward to closing these remaining gaps as the Gold Book continues to be updated.

Alongside this major feature, this release also addresses a rather curious legacy bug. During our last Consortium Meeting, we discovered that ages ago, a rogue conversion had accidentally turned the word “mu” into the micro symbol “μ” across various term annotations (labels, definitions, and synonyms). Although this quirk went completely unnoticed by the community for years, we reacted swiftly and have completely fixed the encoding in this update.

We invite you to explore the updated terms and browse the latest CHMO version directly via our NFDI4Chem Terminology Service!
